Prepare the best available photo
Start with the original camera file or the cleanest scan you can find. A screenshot, social-media download or repeatedly forwarded image usually contains less detail. If the photo is printed, scan it flat in even light and remove dust from the scanner glass first.
Make a duplicate
Keep the untouched original in a separate folder. Work on a copy so you can compare results or begin again later.
